A Primer in Leadership: Zelenskyy

By | March 17, 2022

[March 17, 2022]  In a speech to the U.S. Congress yesterday, President Zelenskyy of Ukraine called on the United States to be “the leader of the world.”  He is a man who knows the viciousness of war and the terrible price people are paying in their lives and property.  But he was also adamant that when the going gets tough, leadership counts more than anything else.

For now, it is obvious that for the moment, Zelenskyy is the leader of the world; when it comes to showing us what real character should be.  He is a paragon of right and wrong, and what is required to be on the side of good.  He asked us to stand against an existential threat to his country; the Russian military.

Much has been written about the importance of character in a leader.  Today, we are treated with the belief that a person’s character does not matter, but the group we belong to defines who we are.  I reject that idea.  I believe most of us are smart enough to know that the possession of character traits is really what makes us human.

When things get difficult, those who have character are the people who step forward to do the right thing.  They act when the chips are down.

Character is a complex idea but remains relatively unchanging across time and cultures.  People know when character is needed.  Zelenskyy’s brief but substantive speech will surely strengthen America’s resolve to better support his country.

Asking for an air defense system instead of a no-fly zone shows that he is flexible and can think off the cuff.  He also knows what the allies will not do.  The Ukraine military and their citizens are showing also they can think and act creatively to slow the Russian juggernaut.  Zelenskyy was convincing that he can win the war.

Character is not the feature of war only.  It is often found in the most trying of times and when we come under great threats of natural disaster, famine, disease, etc.  Character is possessed by anyone who has the inner strength to do good things.  It matters not our age, gender, class of birth, religion, or, dare I say, upbringing.

Individual character is what allows the world to progress.  And the fact that we are progressing in so many areas tells me that there are plenty of people who have character in ample supply.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy is showing the world what leadership can accomplish.

We are being told that Ukrainian Pres. Zelensky is “Churchillain.” Well, maybe so ….. in words. Let’s see if his deeds match.

Compare and contrast Joe Biden with Zelenskyy. That should be an interesting read. It is obvious that Biden is pandering to Russia (just like Neville Chamberlain) and Zelenskiyy showing real leadership (like Churchill). Weak vs strong leadership. You are now seeing the results, unless you are a blind man.

Step one, kick SecDef Lloyd Austin out on his butt for his failure to properly advise the Pres of the US. Then trash Gen Milley. Both are way out of their league. Gen. Milley quote, “Ukraine will fall in three days to the Russians.” Wow, was he wrong or what? Now get rid of them and then have a realistic set of policies based on American values.

Another excellent article for Gen. Satterfield’s website that lends us insight into the war and how good leadership makes a real difference. If not for Zelensky, then who?

How to help Ukraine without going to war directly with Russia. That is America’s question. What we are seeing, however, is a wringing of our hands (Biden-Harris-Austin-Milley numbnuts) and laughing and smiling with little actually getting accomplished. What are, by the way, our national interests in this war? Can somebody articulate them for us? I’ve not heard anything other than “we must save democracy.” That slogan wears thin and tells me absolutely nothing.

So far Zelensky has been brilliant as he expresses his appreciation for Western sanctions and arms.

His conclusion, ” if Putin cannot easily reabsorb Ukraine and immediately benefit from its manpower, natural resources, and industrial base, then he is perfectly willing to destroy it on his theory that what is lost in the short-term is more than gained in long-term deterrence. “

Ronny, you pointed out that Victor Davis Hanson has written a valuable article on the War in Ukraine. I agree. VDH is a model for sanity and for cutting to the chase of what is happening.

“Know your weakness, this is the mark of a smart man.” quote of Gen. Satterfield and one that will stand alone. I only wish our leaders understood their weaknesses. I can see them, why can’t they? Narcissism?

Another well written piece by Gen. Satterfield. I hope that he continues to sell his book, ‘Our Longest Year in Iraq’ to the public so they can see what really happened in the Iraq War and what was purposefully hidden from us by the media.

There is nothing worse than a weak leader (like most Western nations now have) during hard times. Things get bad for the citizenry when that occurs. “Camels are on the horizon.” Thanks Joe Biden for your incompetence. You are getting people killed.
