[August 01, 2014] Recently someone replaced the U.S. flags on the Brooklyn Bridge towers with white flags. It was a classic “who dunit.” While several groups have taken credit for the act, one appears to be real. According to a spokesperson, we “do stuff like this for the thrill of it.” These are self-proclaimed anarchists who have the primary cause of legalizing marijuana and other illegal drugs. Has the Brooklyn Bridge mystery been solved?
Perhaps, but it is interesting to ask why this has to do with leadership. Leadership is, of course, getting people to do things, typically as part of a team. Great leadership also means recognizing evil and doing something about it. This pro-drug anarchist group has not indicated that what they are doing is evil. A look at their website (link here) tells the story of an association of people who have the main desire of legalizing drugs. An interesting addition to that is they are dedicated to “making reasonable change occur within all forms of government.”
Anyone who went through the 1960s should immediately recognize this as a spinoff with the same rhetoric. Essentially similar 1960’s groups wrap their desire to legalize marijuana and other comparable drugs around the more popular cause of “freedom” and “responsible government.” They want to “expose the truth” and uniting the people is the way to “protect your rights.” The movements of the 1960s, and from what can be gleaned from the website of this group, all have something in common. They have something in common other than drugs.
Most of these groups were Marxist spinoffs. Specifically they will always advocate for a socialist-type of government. We will be hearing more from this group about the “fat cats” in Washington and in industry. They will say we are poor because of the greed of others and because our freedoms are being diminished every day. “It’s a political statement … Like, wiping your ass with the American flag,”1 according to their spokesman.
The group did say one thing however that most of us can agree. Something not normally seen in these groups, so this is new. They say “dependence is not freedom” and they write it in bold letters. It is hard to disagree with that sentiment.
