Christmas is Here: 2024

By | December 25, 2024

[December 25, 2024]  I think most Christians believe that when Christmas Day arrives, they should be both happy and relieved after all their work and anticipation. And too, as a kid, would agree that Christmas is here and a happy time.

I love Christmas because it reminds me of so many good times. Also, the purpose of Christ’s time here on earth was the redemption of us all. Our church had so many activities for us kids that I was overwhelmed. But their message was clear: Christmas is about forgiveness.

My favorite song of the season was Jingle Bells (not to be confused with Jingle Bell Rock). Written by a famous Southerner and composer James Lord Pierpont – an enigmatic fellow – the song was first released in 1857. It remains a favorite to this day. I was probably the only kid in Sunday School who pointed out some of the more risqué verses to our pastor.

And now to get back to my family.  Merry Christmas to you all.

There is nothing better than to wake up on Christmas morning and to know that your whole family is there with you – and dogs and other pets – then to attend church services around those who you know and appreciate. That we are able to connect with the Holy Spirit is a true miracle. Thank you, all. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. Thank you Lord for allowing me to live a good life.

And sitting beside the family Christmas tree 🎄 with your dog 🐕 snuggled up on the floor at your feet. Now, sipping some eggnog with a touch of rum and pepper. Just like the old days. Eh. That is what living is all about — by being a good person and believing in Jesus Christ.

Sir, you must have been such a little character as a kid. Here you were looking into the last passages of this famous song, Jingle Bells.

Yes indeed. But famous Southerner and composer James Lord Pierpont was more like infamous and also has a rich and famous family. James was also a Confederate soldier during the American Civil War. “ Jingle Bells” was first performed on September 15, 1857, at Ordway Hall in Boston by blackface minstrel performer Johnny Pell. The song was in the then-popular style or genre of “sleighing songs”. Pierpont’s lyrics are strikingly similar to lines from many other popular sleigh-riding songs of the time; researcher Kyna Hamill argued that this, along with his constant need for money, led him to compose and release the song solely as a financial enterprise: “Everything about the song is churned out and copied from other people and lines from other songs—there’s nothing original about it.”

The singing, good food, great memories, and most importantly being with fam. That’s what Christmas is also about. But always remember that began with Christ’s redemption of us all. 🙏 Let us all remember why we are here on earth, to be God’s children, to go forth and multiply in peace and harmony.
