Comments on the Republican Debate

[February 26, 2016]   As I was watching the Republican debate last night several thoughts came to me that we don’t hear much talked about from political pundits.  The comments I read and listened to today were more about how the current leader, Donald Trump, was attacked by two presidential hopefuls and ignored by two others.  My wife said that “it was all about Trump.”

Here are some of my observations:

  1. The “debate” format is not yielding any new information on which to make a good decision about leadership.  Was this the 10th debate already?
  2. Although the field has narrowed to five candidates, there are few major differences among them on major issues: limited government, improved economic development, and national security.
  3. The CNN moderators, like some of the other moderators in past debates, gave sophomoric questions and annoying comments and yet unsurprisingly failed to provide the environment where the candidates could show some of leadership skills.
  4. The debates are more about who “won” that particular forum and designed to pit “against one another” rather than distinguishing who would actually make a better president.  The debates are more rewarding to an ego-driven, duplicitous politician than to a well-rounded, skilled political leader.

We don’t get to see the local Town Halls much but I think the format there is better.
