[May 08, 2014] Growing up watching the old “black and white,” one of my favorite shows was Dragnet1 starring Jack Webb as Sgt Joe Friday – the 1967-70 version. The Los Angeles Police Department has had a number to television series and movies based on its men and women in the force doing good.
The LAPD has a good reputation, built meticulously over the decades. Like any large city police department, there have been problems but overall, it is a highly respected organization. That is why we see movies, radio programs, and television series based on it.
Success is not accidental. The core values of the LAPD are:2
- Service to Our Communities
- Reverence for the Law
- Commitment to Leadership
- Integrity in All We Say and Do
- Respect for People
- Quality through Continuous Improvement
“It is the mission of the LAPD is to safeguard the lives and property of the people we serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime, and to enhance public safety while working with the diverse communities to improve their quality of life. Our mandate is to do with honor and integrity, while at all times conducting ourselves with the highest ethical standards to maintain public confidence.”3
Like other successful organizations, it is hard to argue with the success of the LAPD. They are certainly a police organization that goes the extra mile for their city.
