Dog Hero: Rocky Kanaka

By | August 24, 2024

[August 24, 2024]  Regular readers will know that I’m a “dog person” by any measure you want to measure me.  I stumbled upon a young man who cares for dogs, specializing in bringing dogs out of their shells made of fear.  He is rather popular and well-known in the dog world.  To many, he is a dog hero.  His name is Rocky Kanaka.

I first came across Rocky when he posted a video on YouTube about an emaciated Doberman mix, posted late last year (link here).  I’m partial to labradors but to any dog that needs help.  That is what Rocky Kanaka does.  We normally find him sitting in a dog cage with a scared dog.  The kennel he visits is Animal Friends CA of Wildomar, CA.

“Rocky’s videos and social channels spread awareness about pet adoption, fostering, and volunteering with the goal of inspiring his audience to help animals in their local community.” – About Rocky Kanaka website

We can appreciate that he spreads awareness by traveling the country to help dogs that have been forgotten, abandoned or abused, and sharing their stories.

Here are some of his social media channels:

One of my favorite videos shows Rocky meeting a blind and deaf dog in the kennels.  AMAZIN’.

Go on and support his amazing work.

This man is a dog hero in my book. Thank you Gen. Satterfield for telling us about him and his effort to save dogs who have been abandoned and abused. This man gives me hope for mankind.

‘Can We Learn ‘Good’ Things from a Dog?’
In this article Gen. Satterfield lays out what we can learn from a “good dog” and I love it.

    1. Relationships are about the heart, not the ego.
    2. Material things are not important.
    3. Your physical looks don’t matter; beauty or ugly is not relevant.
    4. Promises don’t count and talk is cheap; it’s what you do that matters.
    5. Companionship and unconditional caring.
    6. A positive attitude is contagious.
    7. Dependable; defend the pack, play with the pack, and stick with the pack.
    8. Enjoy the journey.
    9. Accept who you are.
    10. Live for the now; the future is unknown to us.

Got that right and one of the big reasons that I keep reading this website by Gen. Satterfield. For those of us who have been reading Gen. Satterfield’s “Letters to My Granddaughter,” you may just remember him writing about his own dogs. One of the funniest of these letters involves a dog that is not even his dog. Remember this?
““Old Red” was the best coonhound (a Redbone Hound) on this side of the Mississippi River, and I was happy to know Billy, his owner, and I often went hunting with him and his dog. All three of us were each eight years old, regularly went dove hunting together, successfully, I might add, and we were like glue, always stuck together: Billy, Old Red, and Douglas. All dogs we possess during our lifetimes have a special place in our hearts, as did Old Red, a dog that was the envy of the county and didn’t even belong to me. And it was the right thing to do, rightfully caring for this hunting dog because this coonhound spent so much time with us; he had something special in him. If you can love a dog, this was love.” – Gen. Doug Satterfield

There are several folks just like Rocky Kanaka that can be found on social media. That is one good thing about the social media sites and Rocky is one that uses all the big ones. He is letting us know that dogs are good for humans and that we should treat them properly by caring for their physical and mental health. Watching Rocky go into the cages at the dog kennel/dog pound and sit with these scared and abused dogs is heart-warming. I love seeing this kindness of a human toward a dog. I have three dogs: Jorgie, Rommy, and Billy. They are named after cousins of mine who I grew up with and my family thinks I’m nuts for keeping three GS dogs. But I’m probably the most sane of them all.

Great art work of a puppy, the greatest thing a man can have other than a wife and kids. And the kids then should have a puppy.
