[September 3, 2022] An idea of mine took fruition as I doodled on the back of a Delta Airlines napkin. How could I put so many of my thoughts out to be challenged and improved upon by others? This blog began precisely nine years ago today, in 2013, and that idea was made real.
Over the years, my leadership blog took off in readership. Later, I added a forum where anyone could comment. The original thinking was that is where ideas could be debated, but it became more. The forum was a crucible of new and developing ideas in itself. If you haven’t read the comments section, then do so. Generally, the comments are mild, very mild.
I get a demographic breakdown of those who read my blog from Google Analytics. After all these years, many still live in North Korea (the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea), Cuba (República de Cuba), and Iran (the Islamic Republic of Iran). They love me … not! My largest audience is from the U.S., Canada, Britain, and Australia; all English speaking, so no surprises there. But my fastest growing audience is from India and Pakistan. Welcome aboard, all.
I’ve had a few big hits over the years. Some articles have taken off. Articles like my September 2020 article declaring that this veteran doesn’t kneel. It was my most popular article and garnered the most comments from readers. I still get emails thanking me for posting the article. My third place article was written similarly, why I’m an American Patriot. And I wrote about how important America is to me. Having lived nearly a third of my adult life overseas and spending many decades in the Army, I already had a good idea of what patriotism was and is.
Unexpectedly, I found my blog post on President Joe Biden the day after he took office read more often than I expected. Yeah, I’m biased. Read my articles just listed. The bottom line was I didn’t think Joe Biden had the good character to be a successful President, and I was right. Read Joe Biden: Leadership, Competence, & Character; you’ll like it. This post blended well with another popular and analytical article comparing the leadership skills of Joe Biden to Donald Trump.
My personal favorite and easiest to write was my article on Dougisms. I collected them over the years and wanted to share them. These were tested with my Soldiers and were popular with each one. I always thought, Be Bold. We’re all going to die, so at least be remembered. That is why I wrote that one. I’m proud of them all, and I never regretted any article. Yeah, some were poorly written. Occasionally, I would re-write them, fixing grammatical errors and tweaking my logic a bit.
At the end of the day, I’m happy I decided to create and write for my blog. I’m delighted with some of my more popular guest writers like Sadako Red, Army Vet, Edward M. Kennedy III, and Delf A. “Jelly” Bryce. Good folks, all.
You can find a page that hawks my book, published last year in September, “Our Longest Year in Iraq.” I didn’t write it for anyone but my grandchildren. I hope one day they will read it. My Facebook page also links to the book. My “friends” love it too.
Take a look at my Reading List when you get a chance. I’ve modified it extensively over the years. It’s pretty darn good, in my opinion. Readers think so too. You can’t learn leadership from a book, but a good book helps set you straight, which is important too.

Please read my new book, “Our Longest Year in Iraq,” on Amazon (link here).
I look forward to the next nine years!
Thank you, Army Wife!!!
As usual, Gen. Satterfield does it again and hits the ball out of the park. Congratulations.
Yes greeeaattt website. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
GreT blog. Glad I found it.
Great blog, thanks Gen. Satterfield. Keep up what your are doing at least for another 9 years.
Got that right. #$&*(‘l
Gen. Satterfield keeps on going like the Energizer Bunny with great articles and more. We all look forward to your new book. When is it coming out?
I heard soon, see his article announcing the book, “Lessons for Young Adults: an Upcoming Book.”

Thanks Gen. Satterfield and congratulations on your continued success with your blog.
Thanks Dennis, this is especially appreciated coming from one of my longest enduring readers.
We all love your blog, Gen. S. Thanks for what you do. I also enjoyed each of those articles you pointed out. I am a huge fan of you and those popular guest writers too. Keep up doing what you are doing and helping those of us who are unclear about leadership and what it means.
Thanks Gen. Satterfield.
Wow, congrats to all of us and to Gen. Satterfield. ✔
Yes, congratulations to Gen. S. and to us as readers because being here and especially in the forums, shows that we are serious about lessons of leadership and developing ourselves and making others better too.
The biggest problem I see today is that our youth are stupid and lazy. Lazy intellectually as well as physically. But that can all be fixed. Give us a great catastrophe and watch as those weaklings become strong.
Thank you General Satterfield. Go out and kick some more butt for us.
To all who read this blog, congrats to you too. I suggest those new here go back to an article a few days ago. “The Greatest Public Policy Failure.” https://www.theleadermaker.com/the-greatest-public-policy-failure/ This is an example of the perceptiveness of Gen. Satterfield. He writes to say, “hey be better than you can be.” He’s onto something. 😎
Right, Bryan. A lovely, well put-together blog on senior leadership … oh, all leadership.
Me too, big fan! Been around since at least five years ago.
Congrats!!!!!!!!! Gen. Satterfield, you da man!!!!!
