[July 05, 2014] Sad word comes to us that two days ago World War II hero Louis Zamperini passed way at the age of 97.
Some of us may have first heard of Zamperini when the book “Unbroken” came out in 2010. I read this book as soon as it hit the shelves and was amazed at the story of Louis Zamperini. The book has been on my professional Reading List since the beginning of this blog last year.
As a blue-collar kid in California, Zamperini had many scrapes with the law. Yet, he directed his energies into sports, becoming a record-breaking distance runner. He competed in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin where he made headlines. Zamperini’s experiences while serving in the Pacific during World War II include crashing his B-24 bomber into the ocean, adrift at sea for 47 days, captured by the Japanese, and serving over 2 years in a prison camp.
Louis Zamperini is a true American hero. We salute him for his bravery and service to the nation.
