[October 10, 2023] My friends often ask me this question. Is the U.S. State Department Run by idiots? They know I worked with (but not for) the State Dept. in 2009 & 10. I got a good understanding of how they operate internally. Here is how I answer their questions. “Idiots do NOT run the U.S. State Department.” But, it is run by political leftists who don’t always have America’s best interest in mind.
I was in the U.S. Army when I worked with DoS folks, and I called them the “pretty people” because they were always dressed well, spent most of their day in meetings or getting in their daily swim, mostly young twinkly-eyed young people fresh out of college, and were unable to understand reality. When I was back at my military unit, my Soldiers would ask, “How are the pretty people today?” It was a dig, and we all laughed.
Current Secretary of State Antony Blinken is the latest political leftist to run the DoS, and he certainly appears to be an idiot looking in from the outside. But to think he is stupid, misguided or clueless is an oversimplification. He is not up to the job, one at that level, and he is truly a twinkly-eyed leftist. His political ideology doesn’t let him understand what is happening in the world (Hint: that’s his job). Thus, he makes mistakes that cause significant harm around the world.
His latest blunder concerns the new war between Israel and Hamas (see my articles on the early war here and here). Recently, Blinken had a conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. Turkey is a supporter of Hamas. Blinken takes Turkey’s side, calling for a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. He has since deleted the post after a major uproar in America. Blinken and President Biden publicly affirmed U.S. support for Israel and its right of self-defense over the weekend. The words are there, but their actions speak louder.
N.Y. Post headlines blared, “Blinken slammed for tweet pushing Israel-Hamas cease-fire: ‘Any actual adults in charge?’” This is why folks think idiots run the DoS.

This is the future of the Middle East that Obama, in effect, wanted, fought for and now has achieved: Iran ascendant; nascent normalization between Israel and Arab states in jeopardy; the terrorist group Hamas emboldened and abetted by Tehran to strike viciously against soft targets within Israel.
WHY?
Because Obama was paid off by oil countries in the Middle East. Ever wonder why he owns so many multi-million homes? You should.
Obama’s fault.
Obama finally tweeted out condemnation of “the brazen terrorist attacks on Israel and the slaughter of innocent civilians” after 5 pm Monday, even calling for US support of “our ally, Israel, as it dismantles Hamas.” Pointedly, he finished by calling for “a just and lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians alike.” 😎
I’m game! YES to the question. What I’ve seen coming out of that department in the last 72 hours is an embarrassment to our country, in particular that moron Antony Blinken.

Gen. Satterfield, thanks for today’s article and I do appreciate your view of the US State Department. I have zero experience with them but from my perch it looks like they are full of a bunch of smart folks directly out of college without any experience, who make decisions based on leftist ideology that Biden is pushing. That does not work well in the real world, but only in their fantasies. I’m surprsied Blinken got as far as he did in life. 🤦♂️
