[July 09, 2014] My father told me on many occasions to “stand up for yourself” when in a threatening situation. He also said to “stick up for your friends.” Not standing up for yourself and friends meant that you were a coward and were more likely to be attacked. News reports from yesterday, shows that the escalating violence in the Middle East ratcheted up a notch when Hamas launched rockets into the heart of Israel. As expected, Israel hit back. But U.S. officials lectured Israel on how they should better accommodate Hamas.1
My dad had good words for any youth. Is this not a basic understanding of how people operate? U.S. leadership has not stood behind Israel in this historic dispute. By doing so, weakness is being shown and is a tacit invitation for Hamas and their allied terrorist organizations to be bolder.
U.S. policy in the Middle East is a little unclear. While this is a problem and a subject for another blog later, the lack of clarity and the failure of the U.S. to stand firmly behind Israel will result in even greater violence. Let us hope that leadership here in the United States can make stronger moves to better support their friend and the only democracy in the Middle East.
