[August 19, 2018]Training leadership potentials is a challenging process. The world changes too fast and any organization that is unable to innovate, results in business failure. That is why leadership coaches are constantly looking for the next big things in development and learning.
Nowadays, there is a big demand for educated and well-trained employees. So, what skills do new leaders need in order to be successful? And what are the latest trends in leadership training? We have assembled our own list of the top trends in leadership development that are crucial in the modern age.
- Small businesses are increasing investment in a leadership program
Small businesses face the same changes as the bigger corporations. Hence, over the last few years small organizations had shown a huge increase in leadership development investment. In fact, it is very important for small companies to fill their teams with leaders as each member of the team carries responsibility and impact on the company’s success. So, more and more small companies are starting to look for different ways to construct a leadership program for fostering leadership skills is a necessity for the small business’s future.
- Innovation in learning approach
Traditional methods were created to solve problems of 10 years ago, so it does not make any sense for organizations to use them still. Moreover, traditional in-person training always feels like a ‘problem of the week’ meeting. Thus, innovation in learning methods is required.
Today, companies are embracing a wide-ranging approach, instead of being focused on some particular tool in their leadership program. It allows employees to choose their own tools and methods. Whether it is a communication with a client or use of an essay editor, a large part of what they learn about their work is coming from the workplace itself.
In general, technology is playing a central role in innovations. Today, companies are starting to use different games and simulators in their learning process in order to increase employee engagement. In fact, gamification has proven to be a useful and successful approach and it has already shown impressive business results.
- Leadership development is crucial at every level of a company
Leadership development has always been an investment in the people of the highest positions of a company. However, more and more researches show us that leadership development at every level is a necessary investment a company must consider.
This is why best-practice companies are developing their new employees as much as they develop executives and high potentials. In fact, new employees in the bottom section can have better ideas than those of the higher position. Thus, developing potential and leadership skills in more employees can benefit an organization in different ways.
Good leadership article. Thank you Joshua.

Joshua, I’m glad you were able to get this article into https://www.theleadermaker.com today. I think you hit the nail on the head with it. I especially liked the comment that “training leadership potentials is a challenging process.” Yep, that’s so very true.
Thanks for a good start to my early Sunday morning readings. Much appreciative of a cogent article on an important topic such as leadership development. The idea is getting more attention as our society realizes the real importance of good leadership. It used to be okay as long as the leader was ethical and obeyed the law. But now we expect so much more that teaching, coaching, and mentoring is necessary.
You’re right Max, more leadership development is necessary to meet the demands of an evolving, modern society.
Good comment, Max.
😉
I’ll be giving this article out to a few of my friends who operate small businesses (I don’t know any big business owners). I’m sure they will enjoy it as I did.
The idea that leadership development is critical at every level of a company is an important point that is often overlooked at the most junior levels. Thanks for reinforcing that point.
Hey … thanks Joshua for a fine article to keep us up to date on recent trends in leader dev. Good to read your article.
It’s always refreshing to get another look at ‘modern trends’ in leadership development. What we see, however, is that much of it has a lot in common with past development trends. I guess that people don’t really change that much. Technology changes and we learn valuable lessons in life that can be applied to leadership but other than that, not much really changes. Just my opinion.
Good article Joshua. Thanks.
