[November 10, 2013] My previous famous leader profiles may have been biased toward world legendary people, all of which proved themselves over decades. The greatest leaders possess a long-term record of success.
However, this profile of “Lady Gaga,” the stage name for a recently famous musician and philanthropist, shows that leaders can have millions of followers if you have the right stuff.
Age is not necessarily a factor. Lady Gaga is 27 years old and is listed by Forbes1 as one of “The World’s Most Powerful Women” in 2013.
“You have to be unique, and different, and shine in your own way.” ― Lady Gaga
This quote from Lady Gaga is classic. She gets your attention and her messages are shockingly clear. One of her messages is that you are who you are and you should accept it. Her music is a vehicle for constant message delivery.
Lady Gaga is dramatically different than the likes of MacArthur, Lombardi, Gandhi, or Thatcher. But, she is also similar in many ways.
What can we learn from Lady Gaga that applies to leadership?
- Have a clear vision that motivates.
- Tell a story people want to hear.
- Don’t try to please everyone.
- Be the best at what you do.
- Be committed and focused.
Leadership in the entertainment world is different than, for example, the military. However, there are many lessons senior leaders can learn from her. Her messaging having tremendous clarity is just one.
It would be worthwhile for senior leaders to pull ideas from Lady Gaga. Oh, and her music is quite good.
