[June 23, 2019] Respect is a sticky concept; being something we all desperately want but also difficult to put our finger on. Like many who read this leadership blog, we know that humans seek specific things from our relationships. Respect is one of those intertwined with our likability, self-discipline, ability to compromise, and our concept of right and wrong. Baseball great Jackie Robinson once said that “I’m not concerned with your liking or disliking me … all I ask is that you respect me as a human being.”
Sacred Duty: A Soldier’s Tour at Arlington Cemetery, Tom Cotton, 2019
Author, veteran, and U.S. Congressman Tom Cotton writes a moving book that is a tribute to those who serve and have served in the “Old Guard;” the U.S. Army Third Infantry Regiment. The Old Guard conducts memorial affairs to honor fallen comrades at Arlington Cemetery. The book is a behind-the-scenes look into the discipline, precision, and passion necessary to respect and honor America’s fallen heroes.
Reading Senator Cotton’s boom will help everyone (including military veterans) understand how the Old Guard cares for those who’ve given everything and fallen for our country. The Old Guard is the oldest active duty regiment in the U.S. Army, organized as the First American Regiment in 1784. Cotton tells us that the Old Guard is the only unit in the U.S. military authorized by the War Department in 1922 to March with fixed bayonets in parades; in honor of an 1847 bayonet charge during the Battle of Cerro Gordo.
Highly recommended.

Hi, I just looked at your blog and really impressed by it’s design and content. You are doing an excellent job by providing such information to the world. Thank you so much.
One of the best books of the year. If a politician publishes a book, this is the kind that I’d like to read. Not some self suffocating book that so many like Hillary Clinton wrote.
You are a funny guy. Great example of a book by HRC no one in their right mind would read except those caught up in an ideological haze of stupidity.
Thank you for the recommendation.
Great recommend book. I too have heard some very positive comments about it. I called my library and they don’t yet have it. Looks like I’ll be ordering it tomorrow.
Same type of comments from my workplace here in Texas. Two of my coworkers talked to me about the book yesterday.
I would like to see more book and professional article recommendations from Gen. Sattefield. Much of what I’ve learned about leadership in books has been from those on his Reading List. Please publish more! ?
Spot-on suggestion. I’ll second that motion.
Yes, please Gen Satterfield, provide us with a greater selection of books on leadership. Today, we have a much greater selection of books to choose from. Someone lick you who will sort out the good from the mediocre would be a tremendous benefit.
I agree with all of you on this.
Good book. I just finished reading it last week. Great recommendation.
Yes, great book. Hard to put it down.
I heard about Tom Cotton’s book a few weeks ago but never got around to ordering it. Now I will. The book will become part of my reading list.
?. Thanks Joe.
Yes, me too. I hope to start reading it next week.
