Sometimes It’s Good to have a Dumb Dog

By | September 28, 2024

[September 28, 2024]  Dogs are great.  It does not matter whether the dog can follow commands, learn tricks, or retrieve a ball.  The problem that folks tell me about often is that their dog is just dumb.  Maybe they’re hoping for a magical cure, but I have to tell them that, for them, having a dog is good in itself and having a dumb dog is also good.

Dumb dogs will be the most loyal dogs ever.  Barring insanity in any particular dog, the power of that dog’s loyalty is beyond description.  It seems to me that dumb dogs are the most loyal, highly devoted, selfless, and protective of you.  I don’t know why, but it is true.  Now that is something that we all do know deep down in our psyche but might have undervalued.  Accept it for what it is.

Good fortune has shined upon me with the many dogs (and yes, a few cats, hamsters, mice, turtles, lizards, and a horse) that made my life better, and I know I made their lives better.  Our intertwined lives are forever and nothing can undo the bonds we forged over our lifetimes.  My family knows, my friends know, and I know this special bond exists for a better life.  And even if no one knew about our dog relationship, I’m still privileged to have had that strong bond.

I’m not privileged because I’m owed the love of my dogs or because I’m somehow better than they are, or smarter, although that is surely the case.  I know I am owed nothing in this life.  But, the life privilege I hold is an echo of tens of thousands of years of bonds between humans and a few select animals.

So, if you own a dumb dog or any other dumb animal, then you have something very special and precious.  Don’t forfeit that time.  Devout yourself to those animals, protect them like your family, care for them, a pond love them properly.  That is how we can live a life of good.

“DOG” in the article title and I’m there. I’ve had dogs since I was a kid. These dogs were and will always be my best friends because no matter who I was, they were with me and went wherever I went. If I was happy, they were happy. If I was sad, they seemed to be sad. We are social animals and I think that is why they adapted so well with us humans. And all the dogs that were with me in my life have helped me be a better person and to live a better life. Good Dog!

BEAUTIFUL article and thank you Gen. Satterfield. I’m sitting here at my computer desk with my dog Wendy beside me sleeping. She sleeps best near me. And I live better with her too.

The phrase “man’s best friend” originated in the American Supreme Court in 1870 when a talented lawyer named George Graham Vest defended a man who deeply loved his coon hound named Old Drum. Vest argued that when a neighbor killed Old Drum for trespassing, the neighbor took the life of more than just a pet—he killed an important family member. Vest famously stated, “The one absolute, unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world—the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous—is his dog.”

“As I type this article, my last blog post of the year, my dog Bella is at my feet. She is sleeping there but also in her protective mode, guarding me from any danger lurking and unknown. A few days ago, she returned to the veterinarian’s office for a second emergency visit in a week. Bella is almost nine years old, making her a “senior” dog and thus more likely to have health problems, like me. But she stands guard like the many heroes I’ve written about on my blog. Dogs are us.” – Gen. Doug Satterfield

This was one of my favorite articles by Gen. Satterfield. You can tell he is a good man because he loves dogs.

Right, one of my favorite articles too. Anytime that Gen. Satterfield writes about dogs, I’m there right away reading the article. In this article Gen. Satterfield writes about ‘loyalty’ but as we all know, regardless whether the dog is smart or dumb, the dog will be with you to the end of their lives and protect you all the way. That is why we must also be loyal to them and be with them to the very end as well.

Gotta hand it to Gen. Satterfield for giving us something no so deep to think about today.
    LOYALTY counts.

Dogs are our best friends because they are our most loyal friends.
Get a dog today if you don’t have one and will never regret that decision.
Gen. Satterfield needs to add this to his list of rules for a good life “Get a dog and treat him right.”
