[August 03, 2014] My wife persuaded me to watch a television show she thought I might like. As most people know, I do not watch much television. Yet, the TV show Shark Tank, in its fifth season, has something most shows do not even allow. This is a show of a group of successful business people, the “sharks”, who tell prospective partners what they think of their business proposal. What the show has and what people like is that the prospective partners get to hear brutal opinions about their proposal. Most can appreciate it and show a remarkable resilience to the blunt opinions.
I do not know how the popularity of the TV show Shark Tank1, but the show is very good about demonstrating different business leadership styles. What I personally liked was hearing the diversity of thinking on how to make a business successful. There are a bunch of leadership lessons coming out of the show, many not so obvious. The show has a cast of five tough, self-made tycoons, and they are truly successful and leaders in their own right. Their personal leadership and relevant experiences are what made them so successful in business and keep them doing well.
Another very good aspect of the show is watching how prospective business partners present their proposals to the “sharks” in the tank. I also like to watch their reaction to advice and opinions of the sharks. Much can be learned from this; better communication techniques are lessons that can come from the experience. The many personalities of the sharks and potential partners combine for a very successful show where something can actually be learned, if one pays attention. I liked the show and kissed my wife for her recommendation.
